Project Reveal: Pre-Teen Boy Bedroom

A few months after finishing my dear friends’ nursery, it was time to tackle the much-needed revamp of our 10-year old son’s bedroom. As I have done before, I locked in on one item I loved, and built a scheme around it. In this case, it was a star cushion from the lovely Louise at Home of Boho which was the first item in the mood board after I snapped it at the Occasional Home Winter Fair last November:

Key to the project was getting The Boy interested… Seven years ago, aged 3, I had him chose his wall colour (Farrow&Ball’s Parma Gray) so we painted LOADS of samples on linen paper (if you missed my post on paints must do’s, give it a read!) and he was adamant that his new wall colour be Grey Teal (#226) by Little Greene Paint. His room is bright and airy and the colour is just perfect: moody enough so the print art on the wall pops out and yet cosy and warm, just the perfect shade of grey.

Next was the bed choice (as we were going from a single day bed to a double): I *literally* spent DAYS researching beds with storage. Most of them are rather ghastly, but a trip to made.com’s London showroom sealed the deal and the Roscoe bed was ordered and it’s just perfect!

For the lighting, I was keen to try the good old Insta-famous IKEA shelf bracket hack, which I painted the same colour as the wall to blend it in. I sourced some fabulous metallic lamp leads from Clas Ohlson, an absolute steal at £9.99 each in the knurled brass finish.

Then we swapped the old changing table/set of drawers for a vintage enamel-topped desk, but kept the wardrobe which was left in the house when we moved in (!) and got rid of a ton of baby books and baby toys and put what was left in reclaimed apple crates (you can get them on eBay).

Finally, I got the washed linen duvet set from H&M home – fantastic quality/price ratio, as well as a couple cushions and a squid ink coloured throw. I also took Dee Campling and Lisa Dawson’s advice and shopped my home. The cool lion in a hat print moved from the corridor to The Boy’s new bedroom and an old Singer stool lost in one of the guest bedrooms was added as a side table.

Still with me? Great… here are some BEFORE/AFTER shots!
